Flash fiction is somewhat loosely defined as a short story of (depending on the source) 400 - 1,000 words. Perfect for a tiny miracle, a burst of loveliness while you slurp your morning coffee or sip your afternoon tea or linger over your evening glass of wine.

Reading is a shield against the mundane, the prosaic.
Reading can transport you through a portal to another world.

There are several regular purveyors of flash fiction, and many journals that include flash fiction as part of their milieu. If you’re looking for a quick burst of loveliness, try Flash Fiction Magazine.

And if you should happen to check it out on August 27, 2021, you’ll see my short story, A Brief Affair. Take a look, leave me a note with your thoughts. (You can comment as a guest on the FFM website, or on this blog, or on the Facebook post).

Even if you don’t read my story, check out the magazine.

Trust me, your brain and your heart will thank you for the
respite from doom-scrolling, list-making, and anxiety.

Shari Lane

I’ve been a lawyer, board president, preschool teacher and middle school teacher, friend, spouse, mother, and now grandmother, but one thing has never changed: from the time I could hold a pencil, I’ve been a writer of stories, a spinner of tales - often involving dragons (literal or metaphorical). I believe we are here to care for each other and this earth. Most of all, I believe in kindness and laughter. (And music and good books, and time spent with children and dogs. And chocolate.)
